A growing number of employers are looking to address rising medical costs and improve employee health care by opening family medical centers and pharmacies near their worksites.

"With escalating costs, you have to be willing to take a different shot at the problem and see if there are alternative solutions,'' said Sherrie String, vp of human resources for Smithfield, Va.-based Smithfield Foods Inc.
