Once upon a time, MTV actually played music.
From 1986 until 2003, the MTV program "120 Minutes" broke alternative music, or college rock as it also was known, by offering a mix of videos, interviews and cutting-edge animations geared toward non-mainstream music fans.
John Richards, morning show host and program director for KEXP 90.3 FM, remembers that show well.
"I discovered so many bands on "120 Minutes": My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins, hands-down, that's where I saw them," he says. "I had the videotape where every video starts five seconds in because you're trying to catch it."
