AMERICAN EXPRESS DEFENDS FEES WITH SERVICE
At the National Restaurant Association convention in May, American Express introduced a business-building marketing program that stands to benefit both restaurateurs and their customers. A growing number of operators, however, doubt the marketing efforts of the chargecard heavyweight justify its fees.
To encourage people to eat out, American Express says it will hire a celebrity spokesperson and offer 50,000 card holders a $25 gift certificate redeemable at restaurants that accept the card. The company also plans to test outdoor advertising and launch a national print and radio ad campaign this summer.
