JULY saw CRDM hosting an Open Day reviewing the aims and progress of FASTOOL. CRDM is essentially a rapid prototyping service provider, operating laser sintering techniques; facilities include the UK's only direct metal laser sintering service, for producing nickel-bronze core/cavity inserts for prototype mould tooling.

FASTOOL is a three year initiative, supported by European funding of 3.5 million Euro, and run by a consortium consisting of GTMA, Metaal Unie (Netherlands), NC--Gesellschaft (Germany) and ASCAMM (The Catalan Association of Mould and Die Manufacturers). In addition, there are 39 SMEs participating, including 13 GTMA members:
