NEW YORK-Blame Martha Stewart, blame aspiring shelter magazines, but upwardly mobile home entertaining has reached the toothpick.
No more can one blithely skewer an olive for a martini or, say, a nub of cheddar for the cheese plate with the lowly wooden version. Instead, trendy hosts opt for handmade stainless-steel picks: ones bejeweled with ornaments the likes of which could grace Liz Taylor's ring finger.
As cookware has evolved into serveware -- good-looking enough to move from stove to table -- so have other working-class denizens of the kitchen been dressed up for dinner. The key is products that combine function and fashion.
