Prospect Heights voters will decide how much they trust their elected officials with taxing authority this March.

City council members decided Monday night to seek home rule powers in the general election next spring. The measure passed 4-0 with First Ward Alderman Luis Mendez absent.

Council members said home rule will provide the broadest plug for a looming $850,000 budget hole in the coming fiscal year. Officials say the money is the bare minimum necessary to maintain the current level of city services.
