In Skull, the biggest and nastiest rapid the Colorado River has to offer in Westwater Canyon, I'm kayaking the ``hero run.''
Trouble is, I wanted the ``sneak route.''
Max Young and Dean Krakel already have run the rapid in their 16-foot catarafts. Each started on the right and rowed left to cross the main current and escape its grip before it plows like a freight train into first one hole and then a second boat-eating monster.
Now it's up to me to lead five other paddlers in kayaks and inflatables, aka rubber duckies, on the same line.
My setup had seemed OK: Move to the right side of the current and cut back left to gain momentum. ...
