Dear Jim: We used our fireplace to save energy last winter and are thinking of getting a corn stove. Our concern is fire safety. What type of fire extinguisher should we get and how and when should we use it?

J.D.: Using alternative heating, such as an efficient fireplace or corn/pellet stove, can lower your utility bills. Even though these are relatively safe to use, whenever there is a flame there is a potential fire hazard. Most home fires actually start in the kitchen.
