Del Mar Season Best Ever: While attendance at horseracing tracks across the country this year declined once again, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club broke records this season on both attendance and money wagered.
The local track runs for only 43 days through Sept. 10. Officials reported total on track at tendance of 725,922, or an average of 16,882 each date. That was 8.8 percent above 2002"s average attendance.
"Attendance was down all across the country this year once again, and that's simply because there are so many more options for bettors, and you don't have to come to the track to make your bet," said Del Mar spokesman Mac McBride.
