Throughout history a wide range of mechanisms have been used to exercise control and dominion over the bodies of women, preventing us from fully exercising our sexual and reproductive rights. Our bodies have been invaded, experimented upon and bound, literally as well as figuratively. Our bodies have been captured, exploited and controlled.
Women's overwhelming desire to exercise our citizenship within our societies is matched by our need to be citizens of our own bodies, to seize our right to make our own decisions with regard to our sexual and reproductive lives and for our comprehensive health and well-being.
