STAN LAUREL, born Arthur Stanley Jefferson on June 16, 1890, had been a comedian on stage in Britain, understudying Charlie Chaplin in Fred Karno's comedy troupe. Karno's tour of the U.S. led to Chaplin and then Laurel moving into films in Hollywood.

Oliver Hardy, born Norvell Hardy on January 18, 1892, had been working in films since 1914, as a supporting actor to other comedians such as Larry Semon.

By chance, he appeared as a villain in one of Stan Laurel's first films, Lucky Dog, around 1920. But when the film was completed, they went their separate ways.
