A SAFETY alert was issued yesterday after spring and well water that is piped into homes and businesses was found to be radioactive.
Levels of naturally occurring radon and uranium were discovered at up to five times international safety thresholds.
Radon, a radioactive gas formed from the natural breakdown of uranium, can cause stomach cancer, while uranium can lead to kidney damage. Radon seeps out of rocks, especially granite.
Contamination was found in samples taken from private wells and springs supplying homes, pubs, farms, food manufacturers and other businesses in West Devon.
