IT was once a familiar sight on marshland around Scotland, but a sharp decline in the redshank population is now giving cause for concern.
Latest figures show the number of the wading birds north of the Border fell by 61 per cent between 1994 and 1999, with the bird now absent altogether from many of its old haunts in the Highlands.
Although it still survives on the machairs of the West Coast, rising sea levels, increased grazing pressures and the spread of predators such as the mink and hedgehog now pose a threat to the redshank's future.
