FRANCE had a disappointing number of visitors last year. The oil spill on the south coast of Brittany, rising ferry fares, fuel strikes and port blockades, and a general annoyance at the banning of our beef was enough to put many loyal Francophiles off - at least for a year.

But as the pound remains (reasonably) strong against the franc, the oil has been cleared up, and the other issues are off the agenda (temporarily at least), this looks like a good year to head back across the Channel.
