THE Lord Chancellor faced demands to resign last night after seeking donations to Labour from lawyers he has the power to make into QCs and judges.

Lord Irvine's behaviour was described by former Home Secretary Michael Howard as 'outrageous and a fundamental corruption of the office of Lord Chancellor'.

In a letter to barristers invited to a fundraising dinner, Lord Irvine suggested they should make a 'significant contribution to party funds in order to secure a second term'.
