MORE than six years after city officials determined that its old-fashioned village needed a jolt of life, Claremont has broken ground on a 30-acre commercial and residential redevelopment project.

The primary goal is to address the curious lack of collegiate feel in a community that counts more than 6,000 students at nearby colleges, including Claremont McKenna, Pomona and Harvey Mudd.

"Although this is a college town, it doesn't look like it. There aren't a whole lot of places for students," said Anthony Witt, director of community development at the Claremont Redevelopment Agency.
