2003 NOV 10 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Poverty, inadequate education, cultural and language barriers, and geographic distances all factor into healthcare disparities faced by American Indians, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was told at an October 17, 2003, hearing in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The commission heard suggestions from tribal leaders and healthcare advocates about how healthcare services for Indians can be improved. Lawmakers are looking to review and expand the Indian Health Care Improvement Act. The Act, which expires in 2003, guides federal health and education spending for Indians.
