Calories. Two out of three American adults need to eat fewer. The rest struggle not to eat more. And we're not talking about cutting back enough to--maybe--live longer (see cover story). Most people would be happy to avoid going up a clothes size every few years.
But what does it mean to cut back to--or stay at--1,500 of 2,000 of 2,500 calories? Most people have no idea.
That never used to be as much of a problem. Calorie-dense food didn't lure us at every shopping mall, gas station, amusement park, and fast-food joint. Portion sizes were sensible, not a contest by restaurants to offer more indulgence than their competitors.
