After six years as editor of the Administrative Science Quarterly, and three years prior to that as associate editor, the decision to step down as editor has been a remarkably easy one, untainted by thoughts of loss or sadness. Where are those mixed emotions with which each of us tends to depart a responsibility that has given us so much pleasure, personal satisfaction, and fulfillment? Why this unqualified serenity in the face of relinquishing such a treasured duty? The answer, it turns out, is deeper than the obvious excitement of liberation from the exertions of editorial hard labor.
