In 1997, at the request of the United States Congress, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) invited organizations concerned about skin cancer to a meeting in Washington, DC, to form a coalition and the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention was established. The goal was to enhance public awareness of skin cancer and the need for prevention and early detection by means of "education and promotion of sun safe behaviors." (1)

The initial membership included not only organizations involved in skin cancer prevention, but also federal agencies responsible for the health of many outdoor workers.
