Some designers might have felt stymied by the narrow, backstage feel of this space; many might have simply gussied up the powder room while ignoring the potential of the hallway and stairs. Sari Ehrenreich, however, understood the area's importance as a nexus joining some of the home's most important rooms: the interior courtyard, the dining room, the kitchen, the art room, and the family quarters on the second floor. "A space shouldn't be austere and off-putting," she says. "It should make you want to be there--to stay there"
