Nov. 8--San Jose, land of sunshine and silicon, has been touting something else lately to lure businesses and improve its image: By early summer, it will replace Detroit as the nation's 10th-largest city, or so civic leaders claim.
The boast surfaced recently in a speech the city manager gave at the Rotary Club, but it's also been part of a sales pitch officials have quietly been making to an airline weighing whether to fly to San Jose or tinier San Francisco. The higher population rank could also bring more federal funding, city officials say.
