Nov. 8--Iowa ranks worse than 36 other states in an economic misery scale released by the AFL-CIO on Friday in a report calling for stronger federal action to reverse the plight of working families.
The report gave Iowa a 4.5 ranking on what it terms an "economic Richter scale." The scale attempts to assess economic changes since the end of 2000 in unemployment, jobs, poverty, health care coverage, household income and personal bankruptcies.
The poorest-ranking state was North Carolina, with a 9.3. The best-ranking state was Montana, with a -.7.
