Once considered a blight, the world's largest landfill now offers a tremendous opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people of New York City.
Fresh Kills landfill, all 2,200 acres of it, stopped taking municipal solid waste more than two years ago.
Staten Islanders heralded the move as they saw a half a century of garbage dumping in their back yard finally end.
So now comes a new phase for the landfill.
