Elderly heart failure patients spend up to three times as much on healthcare compared to seniors who do not have the debilitating disease, researchers said Wednesday at the American Heart Association's annual conference.

About 5 million Americans suffer with heart failure -- a progressive, deadly deterioration of the biological pump that sends blood through the body. It robs seniors of their energy for life -- leaving them short of breath and unable to perform even the most simple activities of daily living.
