Summer is the time of most insect stings. The bugs are out in full force and children are outside much of the time. If prevention doesn't work (see box), then immediate and appropriate treatment is important.
Bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and fire ants cause the most suffering and pain. These insects, all members of the Hymenoptera order, can cause two types of reactions: toxic, nonallergic local and systemic or whole-day.
