When I used the phrase "respect for minorities" I was thinking of the late George Vesel, whom I mentioned here before, after my brother Andrew and I spent a day with him in Monterey in the mid-1980s. As a teenager Vesel had stood, on June 28, 1914, in the main street of Sarajevo as the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife drove by. Then Vesel's schoolmate Gavrilo Princip tossed the bomb that killed the imperial pair, bringing World War I five weeks later.
