Two exhibitions devoted to Amedeo Modigliani, both of which opened in October 2002, managed--to sharply con trasting effect--to break with conventional ways of seeing the artist. Despite the devotion of the general public, Modigliani has received remarkably limited museum exposure in recent years. Although not a retrospective, as such, the fulsome 'Modigliani and The Artists of Montparnasse', curated by Kenneth Wayne at the Albright-Knox, Buffalo, and subsequently to be seen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is claimed as the first in-depth exhibition devoted to the artist to have been seen in America for forty years.
