Lane County is continuing to combat waste by targeting the bursts of junk mail plastering most households.
Each American receives an average of 560 pieces of junk mail annually and discards 44 percent of it unopened and unread, said Pete Chism, the county's waste reduction specialist.
About a fifth of what goes into the county's Short Mountain Landfill is paper products, according to state records from 2000. That's 53,000 tons of paper a year.
