As American Theatre doffs its cap to the new season, it seemed appropriate to focus on a show that is buoyed by a particularly heady atmosphere--and by heady we mean heads with hats on them. Regina Taylor's Crowns, a theatrical and musical celebration of the hats African-American women wear to church, will strut its stuff at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre Company, Chicago's Goodman Theatre and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Masterminding the millinery is New York-based costume designer Emilio Sosa, whose other recent projects have included Topdog/Underdog on Broadway and in London. In a studio cluttered with swathes of material, he discussed Crowns with Celia Wren.
