Sleep medicine has evolved from a core of basic scientific knowledge obtained since the 1950s. However, it has only been in the past 20 years or so that clinical methods have become reliable enough to accurately diagnosis conditions and that pharmaceutical, medical device and surgery treatments have become widely available.
Of particular importance to advancements in sleep medicine is the recognition that the brain, and, consequently, other organ systems show unique active physiological processes during sleep. In other words, sleep is not simply the absence of waking existence but involves specialized neural activity serving an as-yet-unidentified function.
