More than half a million deer hunters are expected to go afield during the Southern Zone regular firearms season for big game, which starts at sunrise Monday. Here's hoping every one of them arrives safe at home when it's over. Hunting safety is both a source of pride and a nagging concern for sportsmen.
In recent years, New York has had an annual average of about one hunting accident per 10,000 participants. During 2002, law enforcement agencies in the state tallied 61 hunter shootings, 38 of them during the deer season. Only two of last year's hunting accidents were fatal.
