This fall, as prelude to the 2004 George Balanchine centennial, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet embarks on its first national tour. One of the greatest ballerinas of her time and Balanchine's last muse, Farrell has been teaching summer intensives at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. since 1993 (see "Suzanne Farrell, Teacher: Holding On to Balanchine," DANCE MAGAZINE, May 1997, page 56). In the last three years, she has taken her fledgling company, which began as a pickup group at the Kennedy Center in 1999, on regional tours, to considerable acclaim.
