General Motors executives concede that GM likely will lose market share this year - ending a two-year streak of gains.
A tough October depressed GM's share of U.S. light-vehicle sales for the year to date to 28.0 percent. The automaker would have to beat its torrid year-end close in 2002 by more than 75,000 units to record a market-share gain in 2003. (See story on Page 53.)
A decline from last year's 28.6 percent share seems inevitable. GM's share this year will be down "a couple tenths'' of a percent, says Paul Ballew, GM's executive director of market and industry analysis. "We'll be in the low- to mid-28s,'' he says.
