Article: CHFA calls for tax-free status for Canada's natural health products.(Canadian Health Food Association)

The Canadian Health Food Association has launched a petition urging the federal government to keep natural health products free of the Goods and Services Tax.

There is a threat of the GST/HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) being extended to natural health products when new regulations for the category - which includes vitamins, minerals, other dietary supplements, herbal remedies and homeopathic medicines - come into effect on January 1, 2004 (NI vol 8, no 7).

The CHFA wants NHPs to be zero-rated for GST/HST in the same way as prescription drugs and foods (natural health products will be regulated as a subset of medicines under the Food and Drug Act). At ...
