After some years of discussion and delay, the European Union regulations on genetically-modified organisms in foods have come into force. The new laws are contained in two separate regulations. The first, Regulation EC No 829/2003, lays down the requirements for an official authorization procedure for all foods and ingredients derived from GMOs.
The definition of a GMO is "an organism, with the exception of human beings, in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination."
