Nov. 17--The 104-mile Winston-Salem line takes Norfolk Southern coal trains across rolling, twisting terrain.
Over time, the company's engineers become more skilled at handling trains along the route, which runs from Roanoke to Belews Creek, N.C. They know when to push, when to back off and when to brake to make the trains arrive on time and best manage fuel consumption. For experienced engineers, train handling becomes something of an art. Somewhere down the line, however, art and skill may get a hand from science.
