Fall is a transition period for birds.
Many summer birds are on their way south and winter birds are just beginning to arrive. In addition, year-round birds are enjoying the fruits of the land now. They are finding plenty of natural food from wildflowers and garden flowers that have gone to seed and from trees' ripening nuts.
It's a slow time for us backyard birdwatchers.
Cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, tufted titmice, mockingbirds and woodpeckers are among the birds that stick with us year round, but now, for the most part, these old familiar friends are out foraging for natural foods.
