LEXINGTON -- Billy Hager let out a sigh of frustration Monday as tobacco buyers walked past a dozen bundles of his leaf without offering bids on the opening day of the burley auction season.
Nearby, Paul Miller's eight burley piles also went unclaimed by the few buyers at the Big Burley No. 2 warehouse. His leaf, like most of Hager's, went into the surplus pool, fetching them the government price support for months of toil.
"Things don't look good for the tobacco market," said Miller, a Jessamine County farmer.
