SIR: By chance, I had been re-reading some of the ABC's Papua New Guinea news bulletins I had written nearly fifty years ago when I picked up the May 2003 issue, with Graeme Dobell's perceptive critique of Australia's Pacific foreign policy. What a bleak picture! There could not be a greater contrast than between the enthusiasm, dedication and confidence of Australians in Papua New Guinea in the 1950s, and his "popular amnesia" about their achievements in the Australian consciousness today.
