Advocates from African and Arab nations working to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) have called on their respective governments to support their efforts by changing the laws of their land.

The call was contained in the Cairo Declaration, a statement released by anti-FGM advocates last 02 July 2003. The petition was crafted by advocates who participated in the three-day conference with the theme "Legal Tools for the Prevention of Female Genital Mutilation" held in Cairo, Egypt in the last week of June 2003. Leading government officials from the African and Arab regions also attended the conference.
