SOME time in the mid-1960s I visited a London art show where I was led along a dark corridor into a room filled with balloons. A bearded poet shouted some verse, lights flashed and eventually I was taken down another corridor and out into the street. I was left bemused, baffled but strangely exhilarated.
It was my first experience of what became known as ``A Happening'', an art event in which the visitor became part of the work.
While it seemed very much part of the wild artistic life of the 1960s, Happenings continued to develop. Today we have performance art and installations.
