Dear Carol: We have a patch of raspberries. Last winter the rabbits mowed down all of the new, 1-year-old canes. We ended up with no berries last spring and summer.
It is my understanding that the "new" canes that come up each year will not produce berries until their second year. Is this the case? Is there anything that I can do this fall to prevent the same winter rabbit damage? - T.W., Manlius.
Dear T.W.: Rabbits are active all winter long, and they eat a lot. Small thin-barked woody plants are among their favorite foods, because the green cambium layer just under the bark is rich in nutrients. ...
