CYCLAMEN are being sold as elegant pot plants in their tens of thousands this month and it is easy to see their appeal. They have colourful, unusual flowers which bloom for long periods and often marbled leaves which last even longer.
There are many species of cyclamen, some hardy and suitable for outdoor cultivation,but the house plants have been bred from Cyclamen persicum ,a sweets cented species 15cm(6in) tall that came to Britain from Turkey and Greece -though, to judge by its species name, it presumably originated in Persia.
The generic name cyclamen comes from the Greek kylos ,a circle, referring to the rounded tubers.
