Among the world's producers of Arabica coffee, the Central Africa republic of Zambia presently rates very small with a current export of around 6,000 tons, earning $8.5 million in hard currencies. But the country is making vigorous efforts to boost production to 20,000 tons by the end of the decade, and to create greater awareness of the potential among the world's coffee buyers.
Zambia is the size of Texas--or of Britain and France combined--with a population of 11.5 million. Located on the Central African plateau, it is a tropical country lying mostly at 4,000 feet altitude, with some coffee areas still higher.
