For the short story that follows to be read through an expatriate filter, it needs some introduction:
At twenty-two, I wasn't consciously looking to get away from anything, rather yearning for something. I wanted Europe, and its allure was pure romance. I think I cleaved unto my first husband in part because he was planning a trip there when I met him, and, because, that first night, he read to me translations of Greek poetry. Well. He'd never, it turned out, done that sort of thing before, nor would ever do it again.
