There is not much in the government's new Green Paper on the trade unions to justify its talk of "strengthening the rights of the individual".
Laws aimed at unions are apple pie to the Tory Party, and now that an election is in the air the government has decided it is time for another helping. But, with five laws already in place, the Green Paper published on July 24th smells of barrel-scrapings. There are 20 bits and pieces in it, including a couple of possibly painful swipes at unions and one proposal that, if it has any effect, would probably increase their power by strengthening the collectivist instinct.
