In September, hundreds gathered at Amite Foundry Machine, Inc., Amite, Louisiana, to sec part of the World Trade Center take on new life for the U.S. Navy.
A 24-ton steel bean from the World Trade Center was melted and recast into a part of the new LPD 21 amphibious battle ship, the US New York, which is currently being built by Northrop Gruman Corp, New Orleans. Approximately 21,000 lb of the steel will become the ship's bow-stem, which is located at the front edge and slices through the water. The rest will be used for anchor handling castings.
