TENSE AND involving, "The Missing'' offers a welcome return of the Western.
However, it is a bit off-putting because of its abundance of violence. Nonetheless, we are persuaded to pull for the feisty frontier woman who is trying to rescue her teenage daughter from renegade Apaches. If she won't give up, the least we can do is stick with her.
The setting is 1885 on a homestead maintained by the hard-working Maggie Gilkeson. Played by the striking, unique Cate Blanchett, Maggie is a frontier woman who rates right up there with Jean Arthur in "Shane,'' Geraldine Page in ''Hondo'' and Joan Hackett in "Will ...
