For fifty days the Red Army and the best Hitler forces remained locked in one of the greatest battles that unfolded in the very heart of Russia. The German efforts to avenge the Stalingrad defeat in the course of the Operation Citadel launched on 5 July 1943 failed. The greatest battle of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) at the Kursk Salient was completed on 23 August 1943 when the city of Kharkov was captured. The main group of the German forces on which Hitler pinned his most ambitious military and political hopes was routed: 30 best fascist divisions, 7 of them being panzer divisions were destroyed.
